EROTIC SECRETS OF POMPEII - EP REVIEW

Erotic Secrets of Pompeii - Trash Jugular EP
(Deaf Endling Records)

Release Date: Out Now

Bristol outfit Erotic Secrets of Pompeii are heading out of 2022 with reckless abandon and I am here for that kind of energy right now. 'Trash Jugular' (great title) is five tracks of beautiful chaos starting with 'In The Cosmic Hour' which matches a lurching bass line and rumbling drums with strung out guitars and punk crooning to make a devilishly disorientating noise. 'Nemesis Please' feels like IDLES and Royal Blood collaborating with Bono's MacPhisto character doing lines off the mixing desk as the swaggering melodies wink and lick their lips at every passing victim.

There's a playful but dark angularity to 'Truth Coming Out Of Her Well' with elements of Franz Ferdinand, the Fall and Roxy Music mingling in the melodies. There is, however, no playfulness to the throbbing drone that starts 'They Wouldn't Let Me Write My Book' before it turns in to swirling, sweating, gnashing beast of a song that wouldn't be out of place in a Gogol Bordello or System of a Down song. The EP is finished of with 'Rorschach Rorschach', a song which manages to match pure power with just enough style to pass if off in polite society it is always a monster underneath and no amount of training or finery can change that. Erotic Secrets of Pompeii seem to have a steely determination on this EP and a tasty UK tour already booked for 2023 so keep an eye out for these guys - in every sense.
