DEUX FURIEUSES - ALBUM REVIEW

Deux Furieuses - Songs From Planet Earth (Xtra
Mile Recordings)

Release Date: Out Now

Politically driven duo Deux Furieuses are back with new album 'Songs From Planet Earth' and it has arrived with perfect timing. Opening with 'Isolation Days', we find the duo of Ros Cairney and Van Antoniadou in reflective mood as a meandering guitar gets going in subdued mood before a rolling, horse gallop of a beat joins in and you can feel the brooding energy in the background. 'All We Need Is Sanctuary' picks up the pace a little with a menacing riff tinged with hope making for a song that is somewhere between punk and folk but perfectly balanced.

Former single 'Bring Down The Government' does exactly what it says on the tin with aggressive, stabbing riffs and beats acting as jabs to the torso of a flabby Conservative party. 'Fool All The People' picks up the baton and runs with it as a dark cloud gathers on the horizon before 'Our Day Will Come' presents a call to arms for those ready to fight back with Cairney leading the charge, guitar in the air and vocals delivered with controlled anger. On 'Let Them Pass' the pair revert to more folky and progressive structures showing off the growth in the band with a song that seems tailor made for cinema at some point. Similarly, 'Place of Stones' has an almost medieval vibe to it that gives the melodies a timeless quality.

'Know The Score' brings back the fizzing and crackling energy that will appeal to fans of Frank Turner and a young Bruce Springsteen before 'Be Water' really shows off the musicianship of Deux Furieuses with a sharp melody combining effectively with some outstanding drum work from Antoniadou. We finish on 'Our Tribe' which is a song perfect for the live environment with a chunky chords, sing-a-long vocals and the kind of drums that rearrange your vital organs whether you like it or not. I came expecting the anger and directness that Deux Furieuses are rightly known for but this album shows at least one more layer to the band and there's even more to come. Outstanding.
