EMI JEEN - EP REVIEW

Emi Jeen - Why So Serious? EP

Release Date: Out Now

Six tracks of alt-pop gloriousness now from Monetral's Emi Jeen on her new EP, 'Why So Serious?'. Kicking off with 'Everything, Something, Nothing', Emi Jeen takes a lead from Alanis and Avril but with a nod to peers like UPSAHL and K.Flay as well on a punchy anthemic opening track. 'No Emotion = No Tomorrow' picks up the energy from the first track with driving beats, infectious melodies and the kind of vocals that were made for heavy radio rotation. There is a more vulnerable vibe to 'One Million Perfume' as the jangling guitars and dreamy vocals give this a wistful feel.

The energy drops down to something more poppy with a hint or trance on 'Dark Lonely Summer' before 'Hurt U' goes all cinematic on us with a sweeping melody and a Bond-esque sense of the dramatic. The EP closes out on 'Wolves' which is not a tribute to English football team Wolverhampton Wanderers but is in fact a raw and rocky take down of the end of a relationship with hints of Pink in the melodies and the energy. The beauty of this EP is the combination of raw emotion and slick production sewn together with the kind of melodies that stick in your head - it's a heady brew.
