THE CLOCKWORKS - EP REVIEW

The Clockworks - The Clockworks EP (It's
Creation Baby)

Release Date: Out Now

Irish upstarts the Clockworks have released their self-titled EP on the world and it wastes absolutely no time in getting down to business. The urgent and twitching guitars of 'Endgame' take the best parts of Maximo Park and the Kaiser Chiefs and imbue them with a more animated version of Fontaines D.C.'s style of angst ridden indie-punk. 'Money (I Don't Wanna Hear It)' is a 2022 take on '22 Grand Job' with angular guitars and both barrels aimed squarely at the treadmill of life and those willingly treading it.

On recent single 'Feels So Real', the bristling social commentary is matched by the spat out crooning delivering an anthem for a disaffected generation trying to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. The EP finishes up on 'The Temper', an acoustic ramble that is part Shane McGowan and part Pete Doherty telling a story of kitchen sink drama over a simple melody with a fag burning out in the ash tray. I don't want to use the phrase 'proper band' but when the songwriting, musicianship and substance is this good then it's hard not to wonder at the potential of these four brothers.
