BEN & DOM - EP REVIEW

Ben & Dom - Shoulder EP

Release Date: Out Now

This was an exciting release to hit play on as South London duo Ben & Dom perform purely with their voices and that's an unusual USP in this day and age. The 'Shoulder' EP opens with 'Lopsided' which immediately puts me in mind of Alt-J or Dutch Uncles as the two voices interplay like a monastic chant but with more playfulness and jollity. 'By Your Side' is a more sombre affair which has a lonely air to it as the gents sing of companionship and just generally being a good friend - it is genuinely soothing and comforting stuff.

"Take the world off my shoulders" they sing in beautiful harmony at the start of 'Atlas' as the one minute track offers succor and calm in equal measure. 'Crow', by contrast, is a darker affair with a sparse beat beaten out on a desk while the two voices urge each other on like a rider pushing his horse faster and faster over a murky moor. These two men and their rich, velvety voices work so well together on 'A Beautiful Man' that I'm tempted to throw a bunch of cash at them now to record a Christmas album just for personal consumption. The collection closes out on 'From One Man To Another' which sees Ben & Dom singing in the round with their soothing vocals plaiting in to one another like the hair of a fair maiden on her wedding day. Pure, brilliant, effortless, note perfect and utterly unique.
