I have to admit that this is my first exposure to Canadian collective Mother Mother but on the basis of new single 'Life' I am a little more than intrigued. Brutal drums and a buzzing bass line are just the start as a woozy ice cream van melody and distorted stylophone join in the dystopian symphony. Then come the vocals which exist somewhere between Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Talk Talk and the Killers preaching to a mid-West congregation of converts. This is theatrical, performative, ambitious and bleak but, at all times, enthralling and thoroughly engaging.
