PATTERN PUSHER - EP REVIEW

Pattern Pusher - Sunrise EP

Release Date: 29th October 2021

It's always satisfying when promising artists make that step to the next level so watching Exeter trio Pattern Pusher head out on an autumn tour of the back of this forthcoming EP and a string of superb summer festival performances is particularly gratifying. The 'Sunrise' EP opens with the brilliantly itchy energy of 'Find the Light' as the ivories jump off the keyboard and the bass pulses and pops to get your fancing feet twitching - a common theme on this collection. Recent single 'Happy Place' picks up the mood with a gorgeous, soul-infused indie-pop ode to escaping the humdrum of the day-to-day by drifting off to a better place.

Middle track 'Come Along' has a real 70s vibe with the kind of funky groove that Shaft would dig but again the theme is uptempo, danceable and uplifting melodies with a chorus to die for (and soulful vocals to resurrect to). 'Another Girl' has an airy lightness to it that might float past you were it not for the urgent piano, funky guitar and punchy rhythm section holding on to your attention for dear life. The EP closes out with a bit of a ballad in the shape of 'Hey Dude' which caught me so off guard that this song of platonic love and loss brought tears to my eyes as the rolling drums and heartfelt piano swell behind the lyrics delivered from a voice hanging on by a thread. Pure emotion, raw funk, deep grooves and hooky melodies for days. This is going to be one of the best EPs you hear this year and maybe next year too. Seriously impressive stuff.
