18 year old Nashville singer-songwriter (and guitarist) Bailey James is fast becoming one of my favourite voices of 2021 and new single 'Finally Free' does nothing to change my thinking on that front. This is a smoky and laid back blues number that tells the story of escaping a toxic relationship set to a gentle guitar melody and shuffling beat. The chorus kicks things up a notch but its James' voice that really carries this one as her soulful but powerful vocal switches from demure to devastating with the flutter of her eye lashes. Throw in some gorgeous lap steel guitar and the kind of emotional power that will have fans empathising and singing along and you've got yourself a real power-balled without any of the schmaltz that can make power-ballads such a turn-off.
