There is something wonderfully off-centre about this new release from Australian artist Ryan Downey, like a car driving with oval wheels or a playing tennis with a square ball. Needless to say, I am in love with the wonky 'Half Light' which has the intimate urgency of a indie-rock track from The The but the sweeping ambition of a Nick Cave ballad all riding on the back of shimmering, cavernous guitars. Downey's voice sounds like he's balancing the wire of getting this recording right before the studio time runs out, all half controlled emotion and melody coming from the belly while the sounds and images swirl around him. Wonky, sweeping, hard to control and imaginative. Beautiful.
