BERRIES – EP REVIEW

Berries – Live Sessions From Big Smith Studios
(Xtra Mile Recordings)

Release Date: 14th May 2021

London trio Berries go from strength to strength as they drop this ‘live’ EP, largely recorded as part of a session for John Kennedy’s Radio X show. Opening with recent single ‘Copy’, the band do their grungey thing with a rapidly developing sense of style and a definite British flavour which makes me wonder what would have happened if Lush had broken the states. ‘Dangerous’ lumbers in to view with rolling drums and a treacly bassline that the guitars and vocals cut through like a searingly hot knife or is that a sword?

The one track not for the ears of the Radio X audience is ‘Silent’ which has a sound that feels ready to launch on American audiences with its slick melodies and British charm oozing out from behind the snarl. The final track of this collection is ‘Lies’ which finds the rhythm section once again in thunderous form with vocal harmonies doing a fine job of taming the savage beast. I feel sure Berries are soon going to be more than hotly tipped with the amount of backing they’re getting around the industry so this is your last chance to get on board before you seem like you’re bandwagoneering.
