GOLD TOP BABY – SINGLE REVIEW

Gold Top Baby – Gold Top Baby
Gold Top Baby

Manchester’s Gold Top Baby is the new musical vehicle of former Long Blondes supermo Dorian Cox and he is on reliably lo-fi form. A perky 80s drum machine is met by the kind of synth melody you’d expect from early Pet Shop Boys records as ‘Gold Top Baby’ builds up the layers of electronic disco in to a frenzy of euphoria. “Gold top baby, gold top” sings Cox followed by “You’re half cream half heart-ache” in a melee of influences from PSB and New Order to Human League and Marc Almond. As this seven-minute odyssey through a dairy based break up unfolds, you’re useless to resist that pulsing bassline and relentless energy of that ever-present beat. Milk was a good choice.
