With the guest talents of Jason Isbell and Duane Betts swelling their ranks, North Mississippi are in feisty form on new track ‘Mean Old World’. Slick blues guitars stride in to view before the opening line, “It’s a mean old world when you try to live it by yourself”, makes this as authentic a blues track as I’ve heard all year (right up there with the excellent Mavis Staples album). A steady beat, a thudding bass and those layered guitars all make for a great groove that makes you want to lean back into a glass of fine bourbon and gently rock your chair out on the stoop. North Mississippi Allstars are the real deal and if you like your blues with a groove and a growl then you’ll love this outfit.
