KYLIE – LIVE REVIEW

Kylie + Nina Nesbitt live @ Eden Session, St Austell – 3rd July 2019

As the infamous Eden Sessions eased smoothly past their one hundredth show, it felt about time that I
Nina Nesbitt
checked out a show and the visit of the princess of pop, Kylie Minogue, seemed as good a time as any. Aside from being an amazing location (the Eden Project, for the uninitiated, is a series of biodomes sunk into an abandoned quarry in Cornwall) and having some outstanding food stalls, what the Eden Sessions offers is big name artists in a relatively intimate environment with spot on sound.

There were three parts to the evening and first of these was the excellent support act Nina Nesbitt. The Scottish singer-songwriter is someone I’ve been a fan of for a while now but it was great to see her live as she worked the crowd and warmed them up to her sound. Nesbitt’s voice never wavered from the true note, her songs showed a real maturity and she wasn’t afraid to get the crowd involved in call backs. As well as a beautiful cover of Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ given the slowed down John Lewis treatment and a brief nod to Destiny’s Child, Nesbitt performed her own impressive catalogue including the likes of ‘Loyal to Me’, ‘Somebody Special’ and ‘The Best You Had’. The highlight for me was recent single ‘Colder’ which showed off Nesbitt’s vocal range and performance ability which will surely see her back here as the main act before too long.

Now, for the second part and there aren’t many scenarios where Kylie Minogue isn’t the main event but when she appears from behind a glittering pillar looking every inch of fabulous then you are left in no doubt as to who’s world you’re living in. With dancers who look like they’ve just fallen out of the H&M Summer catalogue and a backing band full of seriously talented musicians, any artist would have been off to flyer but this is Kylie, she didn’t need any of that. The early material got the crowd singing along to the likes of ‘Hand On Your Heart’, ‘Especially For You’, ‘the Loco-Motion’, ‘Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi’ and ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ and you could see the 12 year old girls in the women who had grown up with these songs beaming with joy. Those smiles were met with an equally happy smile from the Australian as she saw how much pleasure her music and performance gave to the sold-out audience.

Moving through the 90s-00s material and a number of costume changes, Kylie treated us to reworked and remixed versions of ‘Confide in Me’, ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’, ‘Where the Wild Roses Grow’ and ‘Love at First Sight’. The emotion behind Kylie’s performance of her 2010 hit ‘All the Lovers’ had strangers hugging and arms swaying while we all sang along as one. With an encore of the bitter-sweet recent single ‘Dancing’ and the anthemic ‘Spinning Around’ the show was over and thousands of happy, drained fans drifted into the night left completely satisfied. Kylie is a consummate performer with a seriously impressive catalogue of songs and if you want to experience pure positivity and love then I can thoroughly recommend this as an experience.

Finally, we come to part three. I don’t know if this was something I’m not used to from normally going to smaller shows but the second there was a hint of Kylie the stage was blocked off by a sea of mobile phones being held aloft. Now, I’m no Grinch, by all means get a pic or a video of your hero but can you at least take the card holder off your phone before you hold it up in front of my face. Also, if you’re going to face-time your mate then get out of the way so I can see Kylie rather than your mate shaving his face and dancing to the music. I’ve never been that bothered by mobile phones at gigs but this was just beyond insane so my idea is this – split the audience area down the middle, left hand side is phone free, right hand side can go nuts with their Snapchat filters. It didn’t ruin the night but that’s down to Kylie just putting an impervious show.
