FRANK TURNER – SINGLE REVIEW

Frank Turner – Sister Rosetta (Xtra Mile

Release Date: Out Now

I know Frank Turner has his fair share of detractors out there but I’m still a fan of the guy and I think he’s earned his place in the musical hall of fame. Turner’s new single ‘Sister Rosetta’ is an ode to the now infamous Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a true pioneer of rock’n’roll and gospel, but still retains the classic acoustic strum of a Frank Turner tune. This is one of Turner’s more uplifting melodies as he sings “Sister Rosetta, Godmother of rock’n’roll, the original sister of soul” atop a summery, bobbing little rhythm. The lyrics go on to tackle the issue of Tharpe’s recent resurgence as an influence among hipsters musicians (“the whiteboy hype would eventually fade but the way that she played would stay”) and, in general, this is another great Frank Turner story set to a pleasing melody with superb lyrics. Job done.
