DRAKES ISLAND – SINGLE REVIEW

Drakes Island – The Hollow
Drakes Island - The Hollow

Release Date: 7th June 2019

This latest release from Plymouth based collective Drakes Island is a little more upbeat than some of their material at first listen but there is still a frustrated energy in there that makes this utterly enthralling. ‘The Hollow’ opens with a plucked acoustic guitar line echoing into the late summer evening air and is soon joined by an impatient beat and vocals that glower through near-clenched teeth. This song nurses a glass of single malt in the corner but still has the agility to dance and pirouette to the bar for another round such is the bounce of the melody and the energy of the beat. Some subtle, dreamy vocal harmonies and a slow build to the crescendo that reminds me of Arcade Fire before a country beat takes over for the final push all makes for a song that you have to start again as soon as you’ve finished.

Live Dates:

14th June – The Apple & Parrot, Torquay
2nd July – Higher Eggbeer Unplugged, Exeter
