I remember having a discussion
with a friend once about what determined that a song was funk rather than disco,
hip-hop or Motown and I wish I’d just been able to pull out a copy of ‘Dang
Girl!’, the new single from Boulevards. North Carolina’s Jamil Rashad is the
man behind this piano and horn infused beast and the battle for prominence
between the bass line and drums is beyond epic. Rashad’s delivery is rapid to
say the least and comes from the soul as every Brown or Gaye-esque ‘huh’, ‘ugh’
and ‘woo’ is as natural as a vocal performance comes. Throw in some carefully
used hand claps, and all denim wardrobe and some lavish organ and you’ve got
yourself one hell of a tune to get your summer party started.
