I don’t get to review many Tuba
players so it was a bit of a treat to get this new track from London based
Theon Cross. Then I listened to ‘Activate’ and realised that this is one hell
of a treat. The deep, throaty tones of Cross’s Tube make your bass speakers
work hard for their money as the drums skitter and scatter with the energy of
Animal having a (successful) go at Jazz. There’s an excitable saxophone acting
as the mediator between the duelling Tuba and drums but the Tuba wins the argument
with some style and no arguments from the other parties involved. Ground
shaking stuff.
