FERRIS & SYLVESTER – SINGLE REVIEW

Ferris & Sylvester – Sickness (Archtop
Ferris & Sylvester - Sickness
Records)

Release Date: Out Now

2019 is, I think, the year where a lot of very promising acts will be coming of age or falling by the wayside and LWM favourites Ferris & Sylvester fall very firmly in the former category (which is a relief otherwise my wafer thin reputation as a taste maker will be in tatters). The duo are back with a new single ahead of their first UK wide headline tour and ‘Sickness’ is an early contender for single of the year. As you might expect from these two, the track starts off with some gorgeous, gentle harmonies and soft guitar notes with a distinctly Laura Marling vibe and a sinister background vibe as they sing “I haven’t been home in some time, I haven’t called my mother” and “I have a painful addiction and a problem with fiction because it always sounds much better the way I tell”. The slide guitar is soon joined by some light percussion and the vocals grow in stature but you would be forgiven for thinking that song was done. No siree. An electric guitar rips through the air like a lightning strike and suddenly a blues band appear from nowhere as if the Dead Weather had just wondered in and struck up. This is accomplished, rounded, assured and hugely gratifying music that moves these guys on from a folk-duo to something bigger, something more vital and something, well, better. If this is a sickness I don’t want to get better.
