CHAY SNOWDON – SINGLE REVIEW

Chay Snowdon – Mon Cheri/Sha La La
Chay Snowdon - Mon Cheri/Sha La La

Release Date: 25th January 2019

Here’s a rarity, a double-A side single from the Bristol based Plymouthian Chay Snowdon and it really is a game of two halves. First up is ‘Mon Cheri’, a classic indie-rock romp that borrows from garage-rock and glam in terms of the energy and the crashing drums mix perfectly with the chiming guitars to make a frenetic racket that is surely an absolute belter live. Snowdon’s voice, strangely, makes me wonder what a young Tom Jones would have sounded like if he’d had an audition with the Kinks or the Strokes (following some expensive cryogenic freezing, of course).

The other half of this offering is the ballad ‘Sha La La’ which puts me in mind of the Stereophonics or Arctic Monkeys in reflective mood as plodding drums and watery guitars give Snowdon the platform to croon. If I had to pick then ‘Mon Cheri’ would get my vote but it would be like picking between two sides of the same coin so let’s just enjoy them both – heads I win, tails you lose.
