HYPOPHORA – SINGLE REVIEW

Hypophora – Smiling (Numb)
Hypophora - Smiling (Numb)

Release Date: Out Now

Cornish quartet Hypophora are known for the intense and hard hitting tracks and incendiary live shows so on getting this latest single I was fully expecting something I could rock out to. But that’s not what I got. No siree. ‘Smiling (Numb)’ is a mellow, jazz inspired piece based around a simple and sparse guitar melody from Karum Cooper which instantly brings to mind the point at which Incubus decided to leave some of their anger outside the studio and explore their musicality a bit more. Katie McConnell’s vocals show a new side with tender tones that unmistakably let you know who’s in charge but with a level of soul that we haven’t heard before – matched only by the chilled piano coda. This is an exciting new string to the Hypophora bow and, rather than a new direction, I think this shows growth and evolution from a band who are gearing up for the release of a new album. My only hope is that these guys get the momentum and positivity they deserve and don’t fizzle out like so many other great Cornish bands in recent years. Keep going guys, the world needs you.
