Now I may be prone to throwing around the ‘new favourite band’ tag a little too much but this time I really, really mean it. Welsh trio the Joy Formidable have been around for a little while now but new single ‘The Wrong Side’ is a shining monolith of a song that marks a new era and direction for the band. Built around a steadily hypnotic guitar chug with increasing examples of psychedelic snarls, this track feeds on the energy from bands like Reuben, Biffy Clyro, Hypophora, Belly and Muse but adds in the power of Monster Truck and stitches it all together with Ritzy’s bittersweet vocal to make a race-ready big rig with excellent paintwork. These guys are due to go out on a huge tour on both sides of the Atlantic including dates with the Foo Fighters in the States and I think songs like this will win them a whole new set of fans. Simply stunning.
