There aren’t enough proper duets
in music these days so it’s refreshing to hear one in the shape of new single
‘Never Ever’ from the Rubens featuring guest vocals from Sarah Aarons. The New
South Wales band bring back memories of the Gotye/Kimbra face-off as they place
out a sad and regretful modern break-up atop a sparse piano line and steady pop
beat. The vocals contradict each other like lovers heading in different
directions but when they come together again at the end you see the last embers
of that spark that ignited the passion in the first place. The brutally honest
closing line of “I think you broke my fucking heart” is brilliantly raw but
also completely throw-away as the song finishes and life moves inevitably on to
something else.
