I don’t get enough music from Portugal
so it’s a pleasant surprise to get a tune from the superbly talented combo The
Gift, hailing all the way from Alcobaca. New single ‘Clinic Hope’ is out now
and it kicks hard from the word go with the kind of garage-punk drumming that
soon morphs in to a pulsing electro beat to create a nice bed for the synths to
bounce on like a hyped up 3-year-old at 3.00am on Christmas Day. The stylish
vocals are pitched somewhere between Moloko, Florence + The Machine and Kimbra
but oh those synths just keep jumping and pinging like a French disco in the
70s as the song hurtles uncontrollably towards some glorious inevitability. This
is the kind of song you need to strap yourself on to and just light the touch
paper, let it take you where it wants you to. Trust in the song.
