OK, let’s get this out of the way
straight away; is it gravy? Is it chocolate? Oil? Mud? Something worse? I don’t
know the answer but I can only ruminate as to the terrible make up job that
this is covering up as her official press shot. Whatever it is, LA pop starlet Baby
Yaga’s debut single ‘Dreamer’ is a delight of pumping rhythms, gorgeous synths
and some waspishly beautiful vocals. Elements of LadyHawke, Kimbra, Yeah Yeah
Yeahs and Florence + The Machine come through in the darkly delicious melody which
is only charged by the deeply disturbing and frankly weird video. Baby Yaga is
a serious talent and if this is the first effort then the rest of the world
better watch out – especially if she had anything to do with the concept for
that video.
