From the get go, the influences
of LA woman Pearl Charles are writ large in the faltering lights above the
theatre doors. The Doors, Janis Joplin, the Black Keys and the White Stripes are
all in there on the glorious blues-psych of 'You Can Change' but Charles' own
modern stamp is there, snaking hypnotically in between the organ stabs and
jerky guitars. Our retro-heroine has a gorgeously soulful voice which really
sells this song and you can hear it being used in the next Vietnam war film to
come along with either a drug taking or mind-losing montage. Sumptuous stuff
from another time that sounds fresh and inviting - now that's a talent.
