YELLOW OSTRICH - SINGLE REVIEW

Yellow Ostrich - Neon Fists (Barsuk Records)
Yellow Ostrich - Neon Fists

Release Date: 28th April 2014

There are a few things I look for in a new band or song to find a way in and on the most base level that can be a rhythm or a bass line. The rhythmic charm of the new single from New Yorkers Yellow Ostrich is an immediate hook and should get even the staunchest of heads bobbing. 'Neon Fists' has a latter day Radiohead feel to it but with a little more swagger that the English never quite manage no matter how hard they try. As the song builds up, one layer at a time, it becomes clear that the foundation of this structure is the steady hand clapped beat reinforced by the erratic percussion. The embellishments and soft furnishings come courtesy of Spanish guitar, thick electro drones and impassioned vocals. Without wanting to sound too panicked, the Americans are coming over this way for a tour so lock up your daughters if they are easily swayed by men with beards and rhythm.
