THE INKHEARTS - SINGLE REVIEW

The Inkhearts - Keeping Up (The Label Recordings)
The Inkhearts - Keeping Up

Release Date: 7th April 2014

This is interesting on a number of levels. Firstly, The Label Recordings is a record completely run by Edge Hill University students who also created the video and are promoting the single. Secondly, The Inkhearts are an impossibly young band coming out of Skelmersdale which is, let's face it, not a hotbed of musical activity. Finally, this is a bloody great indie song. Influenced by the likes of the Arctic Monkeys and Two Door Cinema Club, 'Keeping Up' has a sketchy rawness in the opening guitar refrain that is bursting with energy and nerves. And then the song unfolds like that rush of adrenalin when you finally get the courage to stand up to a bully or tell your abusive partner you've had enough of their shit. The band are accomplished and this is a great choice for a debut single but it's the honest and emotional vocals of singer-guitarist Lauren Shaw that really set these guys apart. I get a really good feeling from this song and that starts with the independent record label created by students right through to the sustain on the guitar as the song ends and that bully is left wondering what just happened. Inspiring stuff.
