KALANDRA - SINGLE REVIEW

Kalandra - Onto The Fire/Rest Your Soul
Kalandra - Onto The Fire/Rest Your Soul

Release Date: 28th April 2014

Folk Rock used to be a genre that struck fear in to my heart and derision in to my...funny bones. As I mature in my musical tastes, however, I can appreciate a broader blend of styles and that's got to be a good thing if it means I get to enjoy artists like Kalandra. The Liverpudlian six piece create eccentric and eclectic rock music that is as big in sound as it is adventurous in spirit. Booming guitars and pounding drums are there as you might expect but the Joanna Newsom vocals delivered in a Brother & Bones fashion are something entirely expected. The voice belongs to Katrine Stenbekk and it draws a Celtic and Viking influence to the fore in a thoroughly refreshing way on 'Onto The Fire'. 'Rest Your Soul' is the other half of this AA-side and begins as a much calmer, less bombastic tune with gentle acoustic guitar and Stenbekk's captivating vocals beckoning you in to some sort of elf house underneath a giant mushroom. This second track shows off the band's folkier tendencies but that is by no means a bad thing. I think if you were to listen to this song as though it were the person you loved more than anyone else offering you a shoulder to cry on, then you'd be
inclined to agree. If that last sentence doesn't make sense then you're a luckier person than I.
