Currls - April Fool (Small Pond Records)

You have to question the wisdom of releasing a song called 'April Fool' in November but then Brighton band Currls are ploughing their own furrow so who are we to argue? Chugging and churning bass matches the guitars while the drums pound relentlessly which is all well and good but then there's something different here. The vocals of Holly Deanna are imbued with a soulful richness but delivered with a punky power and energy that makes for an intoxicating and arresting combination. The only comparison I can make with Currls is the early material from the Noisettes and that's a big ol' compliment coming from me.
