SICK JOY – SINGLE REVIEW

Sick Joy – Vibe Sucker (SO Recordings)
Sick Joy - Vibe Sucker

Release Date: Out Now

Sometimes, I open up an email and I think ‘oh great, another bunch of white boy hipsters with guitars….whoop-de-do’ but I really try not judge books by their covers because sometimes, the book inside is a choose-your-own-adventure and it’s awesome. Brighton outfit Sick Joy are one such pleasant surprise and their new single ‘Vibe Sucker’ is one of the best things to have entered my ears in recent months. A throbbing, distorted bass and raw drums are soon joined by a simple but menacing guitar and the clenched-teeth vocals of someone on the fine life between boredom and pure rage. The chorus finds itself somewhere between the slacker-pop of 90s Beck, We Are Scientists, Nirvana at their slickest and that Bush sense of a British version of the American Dream. “I want to want to begin again” they sing in the middle eight and by that point you had better be smitten or we can’t be friends anymore. Oh, and the video is a sticky porno ode to off-brand Coke and Pepsi which either leave you gagging or feeling hella thirsty.
