PIXIES – LIVE REVIEW

Pixies live @ Plymouth Pavilions – 14/09/2019
Pixies @ Pavilions

There are two ways to approach this one for me and it’s left me in a bit of a quandary. The teenager in me was giddy to be back at the venue of so many happy memories from the late 90s, walking in to see a band that I never thought I’d get to see in my lift time. I certainly never expected that a band  of the stature of Pixies would ever bother wending their way all the down to Britain’s Ocean City so it was heart-warming to see the venue full to capacity (take note, other touring bands , it’s worth travelling down this way).

The adult in me, however, found it much harder to let the joy of the experience of hearing Pixies rip through a visceral set of old and new songs due to the now infamous awful sound quality at the Pavilions. Sure, classic tracks like ‘Monkey Gone to Heaven’, ‘Here Comes Your Man’, ‘Wave of Mutilation’ and ‘Where is my Mind?’ were crowd pleasers but on more than one occasion the huddled masses took a while to comprehend what the swirling, echoing noise bouncing around the arena was. The new tracks like ‘Catfish Kate’, ‘St. Nazaire’ and ‘Graveyard Hill’ didn’t miss a step at all and the devoted crowd are lapping it up but once the teenager in me had grown up and experienced almost any other venue, this place was ruined for the adult in me.

The standard lack of audience interaction from Pixies was part of the experience as always and a one song encore of ‘Gigantic’ was a glorious sing-along to end on but it doesn’t alter the fact that the band sounded better from the bar even though they couldn’t be seen. So, as my gig companion for the evening put it so eloquently “Great band, shit venue”.
