MAVIS STAPLES – SINGLE REVIEW

Mavis Staples – Anytime
Mavis Staples - Anytime

Release Date: Out Now

I am so, so excited about this new work from Mavis Staples with the excellent Ben Harper backing up the whole project but while we wait for the whole album there’s another single to keep us going. ‘Anytime’ has the kind of simple yet infectious guitar riff that you’d expect to find on a Motown greatest hits collection but this is brand new stuff people, brand new. As the clicked beat builds in confidence and the lead guitar flourishes join their rhythm partners a real soul starts to ooze out of this one and if you’re not swept up in the energy then you’ve got problems that are beyond my help. The gospel backing vocals support the rasping lead vocal of Staples and the perfect balance is struck. A supreme balance, some might say. Including me.
