THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS – SINGLE REVIEW

They Might Be Giants – The Communists Have the Music
They Might Be Giants - The Communists Have the Music
(Lojinx)

Release Date: 21st September 2018

Legendary New York Indie-poppers They Might Be Giants are back and boy have they timed it well. New single ‘The Communists Have the Music’ is, on the face of it, a jaunty piano lead track with an easily sing-alongable chorus and a stabbing rhythm that will have you skipping down the street like the first day of spring. Listen to the lyrics, though, and you’ll get a whole different experience with references to Engel’s ‘Conditions of the Working Class’, plutocrats in beaver hats and lyrics like; “The fascists have the outfits but I don’t care for the outfits, what I care about is the music and the communists have the music”. That’s jaunty piano pop with a side of politics then – Ben Folds meets Ben Franklin, perhaps.
