Anna Anise - Aneth
Release Date: 20th November 2026
Cornish language music is undergoing something or a renaissance at the moment and this debut LP from Cornish musician Anna Anise mixes the old with the new in wonderful ways. 'Aneth', which translates to 'wonder' or 'marvel' in English opens with recent single 'Kernow Ow Thre', a brilliantly dark and moody Cornish translation of the county's anthem 'Cornwall My Home' - one for those who like their stories windswept and brooding. The lilting violin of 'Skin And Bones' has a sadness to it but Anna Anise's vocal lifts the mood while 'All The Wonder (Oll An Aneth)' bounces impishly along strummed guitar strings and plucked violin while the vocals sway like a meadow blown by a Spring breeze.
On 'Ankevi A Wrug' (I'll let you battle with the ineptitudes of Google translate for this one) we get to hear a clear and sweet vocal leading us on a gentle dance before 'Impostor' brings that chugging acoustic and wily violin combination together to lay the groundwork for some rich harmonies that contain more depth than a tin mine. Slipping back into Kernewek, 'An Myghtern ha'n Duw' uses spoken word and soft vocal harmonies to create a feeling of genuine intimacy but 'Mildir Morgowr' drags you up to dance with some reeling and stomping gyspsy inspired melodies.
This gorgeously folky album walks steadily, buffeted by the wind, towards home with 'Not My Song To Sing' ringing in the ears and you can almost hear the cobbled streets of the fishing villages and the splash of the sea between the warm, rich strings. Penultimate track 'Deray Teg' (loosely 'Beautiful Chaos', I think) builds to an absolutely sumptuous and string filled crescendo that is worthy of a Regency-era dance off. As Anna Anise leaves us, windswept and weathered, we are treated to one last gem in the form of 'Hungan Sul', an optimistic song that whispers sweet nothings in your ear and leaves you to sleep off the cider until morning. This is a beautifully authentic and heartwarming album that reminds you that making music is about the craft, the message, and the need to do it rather than the trappings. No twerking or autotune here, no sir.
