Lady Nade - Identity
Release Date: Out Now
I think this might be a defining moment for Bristol based artist Lady Nade so open up your ears and let's get our collective groove on, shall we? The new album, 'Identity', starts with the title track which is a full on funk-out full of confidence, deep groove and a strong sense of self. The chanted start of 'One Of Us' gives a slightly confrontational vibe but Lady Nade's smooth, soulful vocals plays mediator before 'Rainbow' goes all homespun folk on our ears with the kind of lush, swooning melodies that could only come out of rolling English countryside.
'Waiting For A Train' has something of Lou Reed's 'Passenger' about the rhythm but that smoky vocal adds another layer that makes you want to get on board, with or without a ticket. On 'Powerless' we get treated to the kind of effortlessly laid back track that was made for Sunday afternoons while 'Sober' is unapologetically jazz infused and an upbeat celebration of teetotalism. The funk returns with aplomb on 'Stand' with a rasping organ sound giving the track a 70s cop show vibe before 'Smoke and Mirrors' turns the lights down low for the slow dance of all slow dances with a touch of Dame Shirley Bassey about the vocals.
'Masks' brings us onto the home straight with a swooning lounge bar sound but final track 'Bloom' steals the show with a country flavoured ballad tailor made for driving off towards the horizon with the future laid out ahead of you. Lady Nade has one of the best voices in the UK at the moment and this album shows it off brilliantly with songs worthy the vocals. Sublime stuff.
