Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Momo and his new album 'Tum Tum Tum' already appeals to my 'fun' side but do not, for one minute, make the mistake of thinking this is anything other than superb music. The eight track collection gets underway with the instantly infectious 'Egum Eo' which swaggers with a louche energy firmly rooted in Momo's Brazilian heritage but with a generous side of funk. 'Vermelho e Rosa' keeps the vibe laid back as the vocals breathe in like the advice of a barfly who has been listening into your conversation for longer than is polite.
On 'Dream Of Samba', Momo takes a 1950s approach to the melody with a little eccentricity and a cheeky trumpet to complete the picture. Similarly, 'Morena' leans hard on that late 50s aesthetic with softly bouncing keys and the kind of vocal you could just float around in for days while 'Dente d'Ouro' has a slightly darker energy with a piano riff that would befit a spy thriller as long as it was romantically charged - think James Bond if he had Latin heritage. There's something oddly akin to Super Furry Animals on 'Tudo Que Se Tem' as the Brazilian rhythms are given a slightly subdued indie make over and, honestly, I kinda love it.
Penultimate track 'Canto de Aldeia' bobs and sways with a gentle afternoon energy that is both enthralling and dreamy as Nina Miranda's guest vocals add another layer and, yes, a slight Belle & Sebastian meets Ben's Symphonic Orchestra vibe. The album closes out on 'Tranquilo', a simply strummed melody drifting on a gentle breeze to meet with a saxophone groaning mornfully under a tree as the hangover takes hold. This is evocative and beautiful music that is a joy to behold and will stand up to numerous listens as you can choose to follow the mood, the energy, the melody or the words through the winding favela streets. Bliss.
