Anna Anise - Kernow Ow Thre/Cornwall My Home
Release Date: Out Now
Now, at the risk of alienating a few readers, I want to give some time to Anna Anise and her take on the Cornish language anthem, 'Kernow Ow Thre/Cornwall My Home'. Walk into any Cornish pub that Rick Stein hasn't touched and, after a unspecified number of pints, this song will ring out but, and I can't stress this enough, this version is VERY different. Sure, the vocal melody is recognisable and delivered astoundingly by Anna Anise who has an incredible voice that could be turned to rock, soul or, in this case, dark folk. However, the chugging strings arrange beneath the vocals give this traditional song a dark twist that could either represent the howling winds on the moors or the depression felt by many people at being priced out of their homes by second-home owners and Airbnb. Suddenly 'Cornwall My Home' has a different meaning when seen through the eyes of those being forced out across the Tamar bridge to set up home somewhere more affordable. A beautiful take on a true folk classic.
