Tomas Doncker - Alive In Paris EP

On tour with the Fun Lovin' Criminals, US funkster Tomas Doncker and his True Groove All-Stars decided to record one of their sets at the New Morning venue in Paris and this five track EP, 'Alive In Paris', is the resultant recording. The set kicks off with 'Some Ol' Dolls' which instantly exudes the energy of a live show and the horns really add some richness to the sound. 'Do Or Die' is up next and Doncker is in fine form as a James Brown-esque frontman leading the vibe with style while the fat bass and slapping beat keep things steady.
There's a breathlessness to 'Walking the Dog' that you just wouldn't get a studio recording and it only adds to the energy while 'Ace Of Spades' gives us a slowed down but sludge funked-up version of the Motorhead classic which is not something I was expecting to hear today. With the Fun Lovin' Criminals joining the band on stage for the finale, we get 'Hard Is Hard' which is the funkiest, dirtiest and sharpest track on the collection. It's not often I enjoy a live recording and even less often that I get into an artist via that medium but Tomas Doncker's funk levels are off the scale and that really shines through so count me in as a convert.
