MERCEDES BROWN - EP REVIEW

Mercedes Brown - Light The Fire (Small Frog
Records)

Release Date: Out Now

Wet'suwet'en Tsimshian singer-songwriter Mercedes Brown impressed me with her recent single so I was excited to hear this EP of new material when it arrived in my inbox. 'Light The Fire' opens with the pleasing chug of said single, 'Playing With Fire', which takes me back to 90s days listening to grunge bands and waiting for my favourite songs to come on the radio. 'No Tomorrow' is a more contemporary track that blends the vibe of Sheryl Crow with a lo-fi style that borders on shoegaze while most recent single 'So What' is a very freeing song about just shrugging off the minor problems and inconveniences of day-to-day life.

Closing track 'Kwin nedïhk'ayh (Home Awaits You)' is a tribal sounding song with a slow beat and layered vocals that speak of generations gone by but a heritage being kept alive through music. Mercedes Brown strikes me as the kind of artist who is finding her feet and her sound but at the heart of all that is an ear for melody and the confidence to just create and share what you've created which takes guts so I'm here for the journey and excited for what comes next.
