MARIANNE JOYCE - SINGLE REVIEW

Marianne Joyce - 14%

Release Date: 30th July 2026

So, I've only just discovered Plymouth based singer-songwriter Marianne Joyce and here she is with a single about gay seagulls - what more could you ask for? '14%' refers to the proportion of seagulls in a 1977 study of western gulls that were found to be in female only pairings which cause outrage in dark corners of the anti-gay world. Musically, this is a beautifully rippling acoustic number that feels like the rising warm air underneath the wings of a gull while the soft, comforting vocals only add to the sense of assured calm. When the shuffling drums and strings join in this one really swells and, if you've got one, your heart will swell too which is the mark of not just great song-writing but also an artist who knows how to deliver a song with a deftness of touch. In fact, so good is this song that the gulls nesting on the roof of my house seem to have stopped squawking for the first time in weeks....oh no, they've started again. Never mind.
