Devon outfit Poppyshow have steadily been winning over fans in 2024, myself included, so this EP has genuinely been keenly anticipated. 'Trials & Tribulations' opens with the scratchy guitar pop of 'Sick & Tired' and you know you're in for a good time as the drums thunder and the vocals, pitched somewhere between early Razorlight and prime Libertines, come breathlessly to life. The energy keeps going on the Jet-esque 'I Don't Mind' with a confidence and effortless hip swagger that makes me yearn for younger years and a lower waistband size.
There is a slightly mellower vibe to 'Needed Ur Bed' initially but it builds and erupts into a genuine rock anthem that will have heads banging and pits moshing. The speed goes back to 100mph on 'Unscrewed' and I'm genuinely worried that muscles were pulled or blood vessels burst during the delivery of the vocals - part Dave Grohl, part Automatic, a whole lot of intensity. The EP finishes on 'Still' which has hints of Smashing Pumpkins or early Radiohead to it but still maintains that distinctive Poppshow sound. They say always leave your audience wanting more and I really do want more, I'm just glad this is an EP instead of an album because I'm genuinely unsure if I could cope with anymore.
