SELF TORQUE - EP REVIEW

Self Torque - No Rest For The Depressed (Not
Saints)

Release Date: Out Now

If you're looking to shake off the weight of Christmas and get 2024 kick-started then I can highly recommend this EP from Brighton's one-man punk machine Self Torque. 'No Rest For The Depressed' gets straight down to business with 'Daydream' which mixes the urgency of Frank Turner with garage-punk energy and some ear-worm melodies. 'Anxiety in the UK' (great title) has a Clash-esque vibe to the marching drums and stabbing guitars before 'No Rest' barrels in with a more US punk sound albeit with hints of the Yo-Yos and Honeycrack keeping it firmly rooted in the UK scene.

On 'Sea, Stars and Moon', there's a real sense of euphoria in the 100mph guitars and vocals that come straight from the heart to the masses. The EP finishes all too quickly on 'A Retrospective' which puts me in mind of Engine88 or the Wrens with its moody garage tones and angular guitar work. Generally speaking, this is an excellent collection which romps through a number of different punk variations and it is entirely joyous because of that approach. Bravo Self Torque, bravo indeed.
