WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR - SINGLE REVIEW

William the Conqueror - Somebody Else
(Chrysalis Records)

Release Date: Out Now

There has been much talk in recent months, not least on this blog, of the burgeoning music scene in Cornwall and rightly so, there is some exciting stuff happening in Kernow right now. However, if you look to the back of the room in the shadowy corner by the bar you'll see three cool-as-cucumber figures huddled by the bar sipping on pints and watching on with wry, knowing smiles. That is alt-folk trio William the Conqueror who have been steadily winning over hearts, minds and souls from their Cornish basis and are, gloriously, back with a new album.

'Somebody Else' is the first single from that aforementioned album and comes with an urgent, pulsating beat to pair with the horizon scanning guitars and pumping bass. Frontman Ruarri Joseph brings his laconic speak-sing vocals to the party to add a level of folky traditionalism and the addition of some wailing lead guitar, tinkling ivories and slathered organ make this swell beyond the size that we're used to with William the Conqueror which hints at a bigger sound for the new album and that is something we can all get very excited about. A Cornish export with a proven track record and the songs to back up the buzz then - all the new kids on the block better be taking notes.
