FROG DYLAN - EP REVIEW

Frog Dylan - EP ONE

Release Date: TBC!

Liverpudlian outfit Frog Dylan are the real deal and that is not only rare but also very, very exciting. This debut EP, 'EP ONE' (no messing there), kicks off with 'I'm Fine' and it's a gloriously muddy, rambling, meandering tune with hints of the Coral, the Las and Badly Drawn Boy coming out through the fuzzy guitar and jazz influenced drumming. 'Whiskey' is a mix of Blur ('Coffee + TV' era), Nirvana, Beck and an indie version of 'Proud Mary' all sewn together with a Dandy Warhols slacker vibe and sneering vocals a la Redd Kross.

On 'The Medicine' there's a more downbeat and chilled (aka high) tone as the low slung guitars thrum and strum in the late afternoon with the sun bleeding in through the windows. By contrast, 'Want U Back' is a much perkier and more uptempo number that sounds like the Beatles if they were alive and making music now with an off kilter beat and rattling guitars making me want to go straight to my nearest basement bar and order a pint of whatever the band are drinking. The EP closes out with 'Venus' which has a laid back LA vibe interspersed with Lennon-esque storytelling and skittish outbursts that catch you off guard in the best possible way. So within five tracks, Frog Dylan have become one of my favourite new bands, released one of my favourite EPs of 2023 so far and, well, genuinely blown me away with their creativity and unique sound. Like I said, the real deal.
