Laura Kidd (previously known as
She Makes War) is now going by the name Penfriend but literally any title would
do when the music is this good. ‘Exotic Monsters’ opens with the kind of darkly
ominous bass throb and synth strut that feels like Kraftwerk and Goldfrapp
working together but, no this is just the creation of one woman’s mind. As
always, the lyrics are spot on (“We’re exotic monsters dead from the waist down”),
the vocals are perfectly poised between pop and indie and the music creates not
only an atmosphere but also an alternate reality within which to revel for just
under four minutes.
