KATEY MORLEY – EP REVIEW

Katey Morley – Hearts & Heads & Thoughts &
Deeds EP

Release Date: Out Now

It’s great to have Toronto’s Katey Morley back on the scene and her new five track EP, ‘Hearts & Heads & Thoughts & Deeds’, is a welcome tonic indeed. The new collection starts with ‘Afterglow’ and an ominously thudding beat augmented by the low piano tones which feels like Alanis doing Abba with Feist giving production tips from the booth. ‘The Guy Who Breaks Things’ has a more dramatic vibe with those low slung guitar notes and Morley’s emotion filled voice creating images of a stand off outside a church in the Mid-West.

There is a sombre tenderness behind the melody and lyrics of ‘Little Man’ which, when paired with the country guitars, makes for an incredibly heart wrenching tune full of pathos. ‘Carolina Home’, by contrast, has a dark and windswept sense to the delivery of lines like “I lost my daddy in the war, I lost my home to America” as Morley sings of someone at the end of their tether and the start of a long road. The EP finishes up on ‘Fits & Starts’, a piano and vocal track that has hints of Alanis again, the Indigo Girls and Tori Amos in terms of the simplicity of the arrangement but the incredible power of the song itself. The real winner on this EP is song-writing and Katey Morley is an absolute master of the art so do yourself a favour and get some of this in your life.
