New York duo Lion Babe have been
squirrelled away writing new material for most of 2020 but they have dropped
this tasty morsel to keep us going for the time being. ‘Umi Says’ is a fresh
take on the Yasiin Bey/Mos Def track and it’s true to the disco vibes of Lion
Babe but has Janelle Monae meets Kylie feel that makes me want to dance and
devour the lyrics at the same time. The vocals of Jillian Hervey are, as
always, absolutely sumptuous and the message of “I ain’t no perfect man, I’m
trying to do the best that I can” rings through as an endorsement for NAACP
which this track is supporting through donating Spotify stream revenue. All in,
this track ticks all the boxes.
