ORLA GARTLAND – SINGLE REVIEW

Orla Gartland – Why Am I Like This?

Release Date: Out Now

Dublin’s Orla Gartland found opportunity where others would have seen dead-ends as a minor being told she couldn’t perform in over-18s pubs and clubs in her fair city. An eager Gartland took to broadcasting her songs and videos online so that when she ‘came of age’ her audience were ready and waiting. This means songs like new single ‘Why Am I Like This?’ have a pre-prepared market ready to lap up her indie-folk stylings with fragile, delicate vocals. This track opens up with “last night I smoked a cigarette, my dad would have been so upset” and goes on to examine Gartland’s responses to certain situations with forensic detail as she channels Bat For Lashes, Lauran Hibberd, Beth Orton and Ellie Goulding’s younger sister who is ashamed of the route her sibling has taken. Orla Gartland is one of those artists that has longevity tattooed elegantly on the nape of neck so take your time to enjoy this one but don’t rush, this savourable indie-folk-pop and it is just delightful. Oh, and the cover art might just be my favourite of the year so far.
