Scottish soloist The Woods (aka
Johnny McFadzean) is a bit of a prodigy by all accounts and the fact that he is
responsible for every bit of music and the video for this track then I’d be
hard pushed to disagree. This new single, ‘Armchair Expert’, makes me slightly uncomfortable
as I type this…from an armchair but I’ve never professed to be an expert, just
an enthusiast with no other hobbies. Musically, this is an absolute delight of
a song pitched somewhere between Radiohead, Alt-J, Zero 7 and that mindset you
get when you’ve stayed up on your own until the wee small hours. Cascading
vocals, a clicked beat and the most soporific of keys lull you in to a sense of
relaxation before the song starts to build and mutate like a Jim Noir or Cosmo
Sheldrake opus. Thoroughly refreshing, engaging and delighting - and all in equal
measure.
