FATOUMATA DIAWARA – SINGLE REVIEW

Fatoumata Diawara – Kokoro (Wagram
Fatoumata Diawara - Kokoro
Music/3eme Bureau)

Release Date: Out Now

I’ve never liked the phrase ‘world music’ – we have one world so surely all music is world music – but I fear this latest release from Mali’s Fatoumata Diawara may be pigeon holed as such. Call ‘Kokoro’ what you want but for me it’s just an intensely beautiful piece of music full of layers, textures and rich tones. From the feistily strummed acoustic notes and ambient electric guitar notes to Diawara’s elegantly soulful voice and the kind of bass that just pops up and grabs you by the shoulders, you’ll need to listen to this track at least five times before you even begin to get the hang of everything going on. Diawara has found a groove and if you don’t follow her in to that groove then you are missing out in a big way.
